Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has become the overall champion in the recent 2018 Institutions of Higher Learning Games (SUKIPT) after bringing home 118 medals, including 44 gold.

This is followed by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Politeknik Malaysia with 114 and 71 medals respectively.

During the two-week sporting event hosted by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), swimmer Yeap Zheng Yang, 19, from Taylor’s University was named as the SUKIPT Sportsman while Angela Chieng Chui Fei, also a swimmer, from UPM was named as the SUKIPT Sportswoman.

Yeap has bagged three individual gold medals, two team gold medals, and one silver medal. He managed to break three records in the individual events.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Chieng brought home six individual gold medals, three individual silver medals, and three bronze medals while setting five new records during the competition.

SUKIPT also witnessed Malaysia’s athlete, Teoh Kim Ling, setting a new record in the 5000m track event with 20 minutes 11.14 seconds.

The 21-year-old gold-medalist hopes that the victory will be the motivation for her to perform better during the upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA).

In football, UiTM emerged as champions after winning the 2018 Minister of Higher Education Cup after beating International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) 4-0 during the final match.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh hoped that SUKIPT continued to be a medium in showcasing and unearthing new and upcoming athletes with the potential to represent Malaysia at more prestigious sporting events.
